United American Corp. filed a patent-infringement lawsuit against Facebook Inc. over the use of geolocation-based filters by the social networking giant.
In a suit filed in the Federal Court of Canada, the company accused Facebook of infringing on certain claims of a patent covering the technology for a user content sharing system and method with automated external content integration.
The U.S. corresponding patent for iFramed was also allowed by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Oct. 3, 2017, and has been received by its Office of Publication for issuance. United American Corp. is seeking remedies in the form of monetary damages for past infringement, as well as injunctive relief barring Facebook from continuing to infringe the patent.
In October 2017, United American sent cease and desist notices to Facebook and its Instagram unit related to their respective geo-location-based image overlays.
