DP&L retires 2,373 MW of coal capacity in Ohio

Dayton Power and Light Co. announced May 31 that it retired the 1,755-MW J.M. Stuart Station and the 618-MW Killen Station coal-fired power plants in Ohio, as planned, in response to declining market conditions.

The AES Corp. subsidiary signaled its intention to retire the facilities in Adams County, Ohio, as part of an agreement in principle reached with the Sierra Club in early 2017. The agreement is tied to a larger settlement with intervenors in the Ohio utility's electric security plan.

"Collectively for more than 40 years, the J.M. Stuart and Killen stations have provided safe, reliable power and have been an integral part of Adams County's economy and a partner in the community,"DPL Inc. President and CEO Craig Jackson said.

The J.M. Stuart facility is co-owned by AES Ohio Generation LLC, Vistra Energy Corp. and American Electric Power Co. Inc., and the Killen power plant is co-owned by AES Ohio Generation and Vistra Energy.
