Shoemakers lead same-store sales growth among consumer companies

Footwear-makers and retailers helped power some of the fastest same-store sales increases during the most recent spate of consumer company earnings.

Deckers Outdoor Corp. posted same-store direct-to-consumer sales growth of 16.2% for the first quarter ended June 30. Direct-to-consumer sales made up about 29% of net sales at Deckers during the quarter. Net sales for the entire company rose 11.6% on a currency-neutral basis to $276.8 million.

The S&P Global Market Intelligence analysis examined companies' same-store sales growth for the most recently reported quarter as of Sept. 11.

Crocs Inc. posted global direct-to-consumer comparable store sales growth of 14.2% for the second quarter ended June 30. The metric includes sales made through stores as well as e-commerce.

Both companies raised their full-year revenue guidance figures, citing the successes of new products such as Deckers' HOKA running shoes and Vera Bradley-branded Crocs.

"Demand for our product is strong and our brand heat is rising," Crocs President and CEO Andrew Rees said during an Aug. 1 call with analysts.

Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. posted a same-store sales decline of 6.6% as interim CEO Mary Winston said in July that the company would consider culling under-performing retail banners and trim costs to turn the business around. Since then, the company has hired an adviser to help assess offers for portions of its business.

The largest U.S. retailers by market capitalization, including Walmart Inc., Home Depot Inc. and Costco Wholesale Corp., posted same-store sales gains. However, several executives cautioned that the effects of the U.S.-China trade war could weigh on future results.
