Report: Nissan to end diesel engine development

Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. is planning to end its development of diesel engines as it looks to veer from diesel-powered vehicles and devote resources to electric cars, the Nikkei Asian Review reported June 4.

The Japanese carmaker reportedly decided on the matter after concluding that the downturn in the diesel engine market is inevitable. The decision comes amid talks in countries including the U.K., France and China about restricting sales of diesel cars in the future to meet tougher environmental laws, the report said.

Nissan's French partner Renault SA will also stop developing new diesel engines, according to the Nikkei.

The report comes about a month after the news agency reported that Nissan, which produces two types of diesel engines, is exiting the diesel-powered vehicle market in Europe amid stricter environmental regulations in the region.

Nissan reportedly already halted the sale of diesel-powered cars in major markets, including Japan and the U.S., while the move in Europe will start in the early 2020s.

Nissan will soon source diesel engines for its commercial cars, such as vans, from third-party distributors, the report added.
