Varian's cancer diagnostic device exempted from Chinese tariffs on US goods

Varian Medical Systems Inc.'s cancer diagnostic X-ray devices will be exempted from additional import tariffs imposed by China on certain U.S. products amid a trade war between the two countries.

The Palo Alto, Calif.-based medical device company, which focuses on cancer treatments, received a notice from the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council of China about the exemption, which applies to medical linear accelerators. The devices use X-rays to conform to a tumor and destroy cancer cells.

China released two exemption lists Sept. 11 covering 16 product types, including medical linear accelerators. The exemption would be effective Sept. 17, and retroactive. The tariffs have been in place since Aug. 23.

The U.S and China are scheduled to hold trade talks in early October in Washington, D.C.
