Barrick Gold Corp. President and CEO Mark Bristow met with Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape to discuss a partnership for the company's Porgera gold mine in the country.
Porgeras' special mining lease will expire in August, and the government is considering an application for a 20-year extension by its operator, Barrick Niugini Ltd., a joint venture between Barrick and Zijin Mining Group Co. Ltd.
Bristow said Aug. 1 that the company shares Marape's view that the country should receive a better share of the benefits.
"The people of PNG have a right to benefit from these resources and the government is their steward," Bristow said.
