Philippine regulator recommends halt on some nickel, iron ore miners be lifted

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau of the Philippines recommended that DMCI Mining Corp. nickel subsidiary Zambales Diversified Metals Corp. and iron ore miner Strong Built Mining Development Corp. be allowed to resume mining operations, Reuters reported Sept. 11, citing Environment Undersecretary Analiza Teh.

The Zambales operations were suspended in 2016 as part of an industrywide crackdown on environmental violations.

In November 2018, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources lifted the suspension on the Berong operations held by DMCI Mining's other nickel subsidiary, Berong Nickel Corp.

Teh said the authority has also lifted a suspension order against Carrascal Nickel Corp.; however, five other suspended mines have not yet fully complied with the requirements to start operations.

DMCI Mining has been planning to resume operations at the two nickel mines in the Philippines since March 2017.
