Anbaric files 1,200-MW HVDC interconnection request with ISO New England

Offshore transmission developer Anbaric Transmission filed an interconnection request with ISO New England for a critical onshore point of its Massachusetts OceanGrid project.

Anbaric is seeking approval for a 1,200-MW high-voltage, direct-current interconnection to a substation at Brayton Point in Somerset, Mass., according to a March 18 news release. The Brayton Point proposal anticipates expanded wind generation procurements off Massachusetts' shores resulting from the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management offshore wind lease auctions.

"Their lease areas are farther from shore than the three areas initially awarded by BOEM, and HVDC is the most efficient technology to access all of the lease areas and move energy," said Stephen Conant, a partner at Anbaric.

The OceanGrid project is being developed by Anbaric and its financial partner Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan to bring electricity produced by offshore wind projects to the grid in Massachusetts and New England states. Their venture, the Anbaric Development Partners, received approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for the proposed "ocean grid" to move between 2,000 MW and 4,000 MW of wind energy produced offshore Massachusetts.

Massachusetts is aiming for 1,600 MW of offshore wind by 2027.
