Va. coal exports decline 33.6% YOY in August

Coal exports from the Hampton Roads port facilities in Virginia dropped 33.6% year over year to 2.8 million tons in August, according to data released by the Virginia Maritime Association on Sept. 25.

At Norfolk Southern Corp.'s Lamberts Point facility, which primarily handles metallurgical coal, coal exports decreased 27.1% year over year to 1.2 million tons.

Exports from Kinder Morgan Inc.'s Pier IX facility, which mostly handles thermal coal, declined 26.1% year over year to 734,463 tons of coal, compared with 994,514 tons in August 2018.

Dominion Terminal Associates LLP, owned by coal producers Contura Energy Inc. and Arch Coal Inc., saw its coal exports drop 45% year over year to 880,902 tons.
