Company pulls application for 20-MW Vt. wind farm

Plans by Swanton Wind LLC to build a 20-MW wind farm in northwestern Vermont are on hold now that the proposal has been pulled from consideration.

Formed by a local family, the company had wanted to build up to seven turbines along a hilltop in Franklin County. But on Nov. 27, Swanton Wind filed a brief notice with the Vermont Public Utility Commission saying it was withdrawing its petition for approval to build the Swanton Wind Project.

In September 2016, Swanton Wind filed its petition with the commission, then known as the Public Service Board. The board in June put its review of the project on hold until the company filed a complete and final system impact study.

A representative for Swanton Wind could not be reached for comment immediately, but a report from the Burlington Free Press said the decision came in response to risks posed by uncertainty surrounding federal tax policy and a "hostile environment" in Vermont toward wind. Swanton wind could try to build the project in the future, the report said. (PUC docket 8816)
