Covanta starts construction of total ash processing system in Pennsylvania

Covanta Holding Corp. has started construction of its first total ash processing system in Fairless Hills, Pa., adjacent to its existing metals processing facility.

The project is designed to process more than 400,000 tons of ash from several energy-from-waste facilities of the company, according to a Jan. 7 news release. The facility is expected to achieve operational startup in the second half of 2019.

The total ash processing system technology allows increased recovery of small metal fractions and the recovery of aggregate for reuse as construction material, reducing the volume of ash requiring landfill disposal by as much as 65%.
