Gannett Co. Inc. and GateHouse Media LLC have discussed a potential merger to create the largest U.S. publisher by the number of titles and circulation, The Wall Street Journal reported May 30, citing sources with knowledge of the matter.
The news comes after the USA Today publisher won a proxy fight against MNG Enterprises Inc., which had offered to acquire Gannett for $12 per share in cash.
Gannett has also held deal talks with other companies, including Tribune Publishing Co. and McClatchy Co., the sources said.
GateHouse Media is owned by New Media Investment Group Inc.
