Whirlpool recalls over 29,000 glass cooktops over fire risk

Whirlpool Corp. is recalling a total of 29,228 glass cooktops under its Whirlpool, KitchenAid and JennAir brands as the affected appliances pose fire risks.

According to a notice from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the glass cooktops' surface elements can turn on by themselves, posing burn and fire hazards.

Whirlpool said it has received 133 reports of the cooktop surface components turning on by themselves, with around 14 reports involving burn injuries, heat damage, and fire and property damage.

Around 26,300 of the faulty products were distributed in the U.S., while 2,800 were sold in Canada and 128 in Mexico.

The items were sold at Lowe's Cos. Inc., Home Depot Inc., Best Buy Co. Inc. and other home improvement and home appliance stores from March 2017 through August 2019 for between $1,150 and $2,500.

Affected customers can have their cooktops replaced for free, the company said.
