First Solar to build 200-MW solar facility for Georgia Power

First Solar Inc. expects to begin construction of a 200-MWac photovoltaic solar project in Twiggs County, Ga., in November, according to a Feb. 21 company statement.

The Tempe, Ariz.-based provider of PV solar systems won the project as part of a 525-MWac request for proposals under Georgia Power Co.'s renewable energy development initiative. The project is in an advanced development stage and will host more than half a million of First Solar's thin film solar modules on be built on 2,000 acres of land.

Upon completion in late 2019, the facility will sell electricity and renewable attributes to Georgia Power under a power purchase agreement. The project is expected to produce more than 450 GWh of electricity annually.

Georgia Power, a Southern Co. subsidiary, expects to add up to 1,600 MW of renewable capacity by 2021.
