Transocean to retire 3 ultra deepwater floaters

Offshore drilling services contractor Transocean Ltd. intends to retire its Discoverer Enterprise, Discoverer Spirit and Discoverer Deep Seas ultra-deepwater floaters, according to a Sept. 3 securities filing.

Following an Aug. 27 decision to retire the three floaters, Transocean expects an estimated non-cash charge of approximately $580 million in its third quarter results. The company said additional rigs may be identified as candidates for retirement as it continues to evaluate the competitiveness of its fleet.
