China's BAIC Motor Corp. Ltd. is in talks with Japan's Panasonic Corp. about adding smart cars and self-driving vehicles to their current partnership, the Nikkei Asian Review reported March 4, citing comments made by BAIC Chairman Xu Heyi.
The two companies previously agreed to establish a joint venture to manufacture electric vehicle components, according to the report. An expansion of that collaboration would boost the state-owned automaker's technological access while strengthening Panasonic's ties to the Chinese car market.
Xu also reportedly said that additional JVs could be in the works.
