Healthcare sector continues growth trend with 38,800 jobs added in September

The healthcare industry added nearly 39,000 jobs in September, continuing a growth trend and once again proving to be one of the top industries for employment, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

BLS' monthly jobs report, released Oct. 4, showed that the healthcare sector added 38,800 jobs in September, bringing the 2019 total to approximately 307,600 added jobs.

Preliminary numbers for July and August were upped in September's monthly jobs report as well. July's numbers were increased from 29,400 jobs to 32,900 jobs. Numbers for August increased from 23,900 jobs to 37,200.

What seemed like a second straight month of slowing growth from August's monthly report now shows the healthcare industry actually added more jobs in July and August than it had since March, when 2019 job growth peaked at 49,900.

Ambulatory healthcare services continued to be the industry's jobs driver for 2019. About 28,700 ambulatory services jobs were added in September.

Ambulatory facilities include dialysis centers, hospital outpatient centers, ambulatory surgery centers and physicians' offices.

Offices of other healthcare practitioners had the biggest jobs increase among ambulatory services subindustries, with 9,500 jobs added. Offices of physicians had the second-highest growth at 5,200 jobs added.

Ambulatory services was followed by hospitals and nursing and residential care facilities, which added about 8,100 jobs and 2,000 jobs, respectively.

Overall, nonfarm payroll employment rose by approximately 136,000 in September, and the U.S. unemployment rate dropped to 3.5%, the lowest the unemployment rate has been since December 1969, according to BLS.
