Tesla Inc. airlifted robots and equipment from Europe to California in six planes to ramp up battery production for its Model 3 electric car, Reuters reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
The report noted that transporting equipment for a production line by air is expensive and hardly ever done in the automotive industry. "As usual with Tesla, everything is being done in a massive hurry and money seems to be no obstacle," one of the sources said to Reuters.
Engineers from Tesla's German engineering subsidiary Grohmann are also reworking the battery production line at the Gigafactory in Nevada to speed up the battery module production, Reuters reported.
Sources told the news agency that Tesla CEO Elon Musk, under time pressure to fix problems, insisted the new production line be a "no-expenses-spared effort," for which the production equipment was airlifted to California and has begun arriving in Nevada.
Tesla declined to comment for the report.
