Dell, AT&T partner on edge computing, 5G software infrastructure

Dell Technologies Inc. and AT&T Inc. are working together on an initiative related to open source edge computing and 5G software infrastructure.

Under the partnership, the companies will work to accelerate open source technologies supporting Dell infrastructure within AT&T's Network Cloud and to offer open source automation capabilities, among other initiatives.

"This collaboration will not only enable us to accelerate the AT&T Network Cloud on the Dell Technologies infrastructure, but also further the broader community goal of making it as simple as possible for operators to deploy and manage open infrastructure in support of [software-defined networking] and other workloads," Amy Wheelus, vice president of AT&T Network Cloud, said in an Aug. 15 news release.

Edge computing aims to make data processing more efficient by cutting down on the distance that information must travel. Next-generation 5G networks are set to offer download speeds many times faster than the current 4G LTE wireless networks.
