TOP NEWS

* Telia Co. AB made several concessions in a bid to secure the European Commission's approval for its proposed $957 million acquisition of Bonnier AB unit Bonnier Broadcasting AB, Reuters reported Sept. 3, citing a document. Among others, Telia offered to give TV distribution companies in Sweden and Finland access to its free-to-air and basic pay-TV channels, as well as grant one internet provider each in Sweden and Finland a license to its TV channels.

* Discovery Inc. unit Discovery Networks Nordic struck a deal to adapt BBC Studios Ltd.'s motoring TV format "Top Gear" in Sweden, Norway and Denmark, TBI Vision reported Sept. 2. Banijay Group SAS-owned Nordisk Film & Tv As will produce three local series in Swedish, Norwegian and Danish, with different presenters in each country. The British Broadcasting Corp. owns BBC Studios.

M&A

* Norway's Telenor ASA on Aug. 21 announced that it completed the €1.5 billion acquisition of 54% stake in DNA Oyj after receiving regulatory approvals from the Finnish government and the European Commission. Following the deal completion, Telenor is launching a mandatory public tender offer of €20.90 per share for the Finnish operator's outstanding shares.

* Information tech company DXC Technology Co. acquired Syscom to enhance its security operations and service management capabilities. The acquisition expands DXC's presence in Norway and its ability to lead Norwegian clients across the public sector and commercial industries in digital transformation, according to an Aug. 21 news release.

INTERNET, OTT AND MOBILE

* Iliad on Sept. 2 announced a strategic agreement with equipment supplier Nokia Corp. for the rollout of 5G networks in France and Italy. Deployment in these markets, which involve about 17 million mobile users, is set to start in 2020.

* Spotify Technology SA is planning to offer a version of its music service with a higher price point in Scandinavia, Bloomberg News reported Aug. 15, citing sources. The move is in line with Spotify's effort to test if it can bring its prices up worldwide. The music streaming platform will increase its family plan price by about 13%, the report said.

* Vodafone Ireland Ltd. has teamed up with Ericsson to launch commercial 5G services in parts of the Irish cities of Cork, Dublin, Galway, Limerick and Waterford, according to an Aug. 13 news release. The Vodafone Group PLC unit is eyeing full 5G rollout across Ireland, including hard-to-reach rural locations, by 2020-end, Dublin's The Irish Times reported Aug. 13.

OTHER NEWS

* Former Telia Co. AB executive Gabriela Styf Sjöman joined Nokia as chief strategy officer, effective Dec. 1. According to an Aug. 22 news release, Sjöman, who will also be a member of Nokia's group leadership team, previously was Telia vice president and head of group network services and operations.

* Ericsson's Fadi Pharaon is stepping down as vice president for networks and managed services in the Europe and Latin America market area. Pharaon is moving to a new role as senior vice president and head of market area in the Middle East and Africa, according to an Aug. 22 news release.

* Morten Bentzen is stepping down as CEO of Telia Denmark at August-end, according to an Aug. 20 news release. Thomas Kjærsgaard, Telia Denmark's enterprise unit head, will take over Bentzen's duties on an interim basis.

* Telenor Connexion AB on Aug. 20 said it has appointed Seth Ryding chief sales officer for the Asia-Pacific region. Ryding's appointment comes as the Sweden-based company has split the role of chief sales officer into two new roles: chief sales officer for the Asia-Pacific region and chief sales officer for the Americas and Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
