US Senate passes government funding extension

The Senate voted 82-15 to pass a bill that would keep the government funded through Nov. 21, at least temporarily fending off a potential federal shutdown.

The bill heads to President Donald Trump, who returns to Washington on Sept. 26 following his attendance at the U.N. General Assembly in New York.

If Trump signs the funding extension into law, lawmakers have until a week before Thanksgiving in November to pass another government funding package.
