Total, Hanwha JV boosts ethylene capacity at South Korea petchem complex

Total SA and Hanwha General Chemical Co. Ltd. joint venture Hanwha Total Petrochemical Co. Ltd. completed its expansion project to increase ethylene production by 30% at its Daesan integrated refining and petrochemicals complex in South Korea.

The capacity expansion hiked ethylene production at the complex to 1.4 million tons per year, Total said in a Sept. 17 news release.

The project cost $450 million and was launched in April 2017. It is the first of three expansion projects planned for the complex.

The joint venture will also boost its polyethylene production capacity by 50% to 1.1 million tons per year by year-end and increase polypropylene production capacity by around 60% to 1.1 million tons per year by 2021. Both projects are expected to cost about $800 million in total.

The Daesan complex expansion projects would source propane from the U.S. and are expected to help meet rising Asian demand.
