FamilyMart opens joint store with Don Quijote

Convenience store operator FamilyMart UNY Holdings Co. Ltd. opened a joint store with Don Quijote Holdings Co. Ltd. in the Japanese city of Tachikawa, in an attempt to improve store traffic and sales, Reuters reported June 1.

The move is part of the partnership formed between FamilyMart and the discount retailer last year, under which both companies agreed to collaborate on retail initiatives like combined stores and joint promotion of merchandise. FamilyMart transferred 40% of its shares in its general merchandise unit Uny to Don Quijote as part of the arrangement.

According to Reuters, sales have more than doubled at the joint Uny and Don Quijote stores that the companies opened early this year.
