Mazda ties up with chemical, battery companies on lithium-ion batteries for cars

Japanese car manufacturer Mazda Motor Corp. partnered with chemical company Ube Industries Ltd. and storage battery company ELIIY Power Co. to develop 12-volt lithium-ion batteries to power gasoline vehicles.

The three companies aim to replace lead-acid starter batteries in automobiles by 2021. Mazda said the project will attempt to overcome limitations of conventional car batteries, such as not being to withstand heat in engine rooms or the potential impact of a collision.

As part of the partnership, Mazda will study chemical reactions that occur inside batteries and develop technologies to manage high-performance batteries.

The car maker, which recently formed a U.S.-based joint venture with Toyota Motor Corp., added that it will assess further projects for future partnerships with Ube and ELIIY, including the integration of its lithium-ion batteries project into vehicle electrification technologies.
