J&J unit to acquire privately held medical device developer

Johnson & Johnson's DePuy Synthes Products Inc. agreed to acquire privately held Medical Enterprises Distribution LLC.

Financial terms of the deal, which is expected to close in the second quarter of 2018, were not disclosed.

U.S.-based Medical Enterprise develops medical devices to help in surgeries, like the automated ME1000 Surgical Impactor which is designed to replace the handheld mallet used in hip replacement and replacement surgeries.

DePuy Synthes said the acquisition expands its orthopedic surgery offerings.

"The role that automation and digital technology are playing in orthopaedics, including joint replacement surgery, is tremendous, and our goal is to be at the forefront of providing surgeons with innovative and differentiated solutions that help increase efficiency as well as generate more predictable and reproducible patient outcomes," said Ciro Romer, company group chairman of DePuy Synthes.
