French grocery and household goods retailer Carrefour SA on Jan. 14 opened its first store in Uganda.
The 2,800-square-meter hypermarket is at the Oasis shopping mall in the capital city, Kampala, and carries around 20,000 local and international branded items. The store employs 130 staff and has contracts with 50 local companies, the French grocer said.
Carrefour's Ugandan operations are handled by Dubai-based Majid Al Futtaim Capital LLC, which also operates Carrefour stores in 25 countries in the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
