Unionized workers embark on indefinite strike at Nexa's Cajamarquilla smelter

Unionized workers launched an indefinite strike at Nexa Resources SA's Cajamarquilla zinc smelter in Peru, after government-mediated talks between the parties ended without any agreement March 5, Reuters reported the same day.

The workers are demanding a wage increase and improved benefits. The labor action resulted in the halting of operations at some furnaces and reduced production, said Simon Diaz, the union's secretary general.

The company, however, said that less than 20% of the workforce is taking part in the action, adding that it is working to strike a deal with the union.

"We believe our production will not be affected, since we adopted mitigation measures beforehand," said the company. The government-led negotiations between the parties will continue on March 6.
