Walmart to add 2,000 tech jobs in 2019, exec says

Walmart Inc. is looking to hire 2,000 additional technology experts this year to help expand its online business and better compete with rivals such as Amazon.com Inc., Chief Technology Officer Jeremy King said in a Bloomberg Television interview Jan. 12.

The U.S. retail giant plans to hire data scientists, software engineers, designers and other experts to work in nine offices from Silicon Valley to Bangalore in India, King said.

The additional jobs expand the company's technology group by more than 25%. King oversees about 7,500 employees in the tech division after the company hired 1,700 people in 2018, Bloomberg reported.

The tech team will support Walmart's in-store technology efforts, such as robots that clean floors and scan shelves, according to the report. The company's new technologies include a store map that allows staff to pick online orders faster through an optimal route, and a curbside grocery-pickup service now available in about 2,100 stores, the report added.
