Apple buys UK animation technology company

Apple Inc. acquired IKinema Ltd., a U.K.-based developer of animation technology solutions for the gaming and related industries, for an undisclosed amount.

IKinema changed its address to the same one used by the iPhone maker's unit Apple (UK) Ltd. It also named Apple lawyer Peter Denwood as a director, according to recent regulatory filings with Companies House, the U.K.'s registrar of companies.

Confirming the news to CNBC.com, Apple said it buys smaller companies from time to time without discussing the purpose or plans.

In 2015, Apple acquired Faceshift, a Zurich, Switzerland-based startup that developed technology to create animated avatars and other figures that capture a person's facial expressions in real time.
