Report: Facebook taps Luxottica to develop augmented reality glasses

Facebook Inc. is working with Ray-Ban maker Luxottica Group SpA to develop augmented reality glasses, CNBC reported Sept. 17, citing sources familiar with the matter.

The smart glasses, known as Orion, will allow people who wear them to make phone calls, view information and livestream their vantage point to their Facebook friends and followers, the report said.

The social media platform has, for the past couple of years, reportedly been trying to develop augmented reality glasses designed to replace smartphones. However, it has struggled to come up with a size and form that would be commercially appealing, the newswire said.

Facebook is reportedly hoping its partnership with the Italian eyewear giant will help it launch the glasses by 2023, 2024 or 2025. According to CNBC, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is strongly interested in the glasses and has asked Hardware Chief Andrew Bosworth to prioritize them.

The company is also developing a voice assistant that would serve as user input for the glasses, the newswire said.

A Facebook spokesperson declined to comment, while Luxottica did not immediately respond to S&P Global Market Intelligence's request for comment.

Luxottica is a wholly owned division of EssilorLuxottica SA.
