Trump meets North Korea's Kim in historic summit

Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un met in Singapore for a historic summit that marks the first meeting between a sitting U.S. president and a North Korean leader.

The two leaders are slated to discuss ways to end a nuclear standoff in the Korean peninsula, Reuters noted. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said a day before the meeting that sanctions on North Korea will remain until the country "completely and verifiably eliminates its weapons of mass destruction programs."

"We will have a terrific relationship, I have no doubt," Trump said shortly after shaking hands with Kim.

The summit will comprise a one-on-one meeting with translators present, an expanded bilateral meeting and a working lunch, according to the White House.

Prior to his arrival at the summit site, the Capella Hotel, Trump tweeted that Larry Kudlow, director of the National Economic Council, had suffered a heart attack and is now at Walter Reed Medical Center in the U.S.

The Japanese yen was up 0.29% to ¥110.35 against the U.S. dollar as of 09:41 p.m. ET June 11, while the Australian dollar stood at A$1.32. The South Korean won declined 0.05% to 1,074.60 as of 9:38 p.m. ET, and the euro ticked up 0.19% to 85 cents against the U.S. dollar.
