Coal exports from the Hampton Roads port facilities in Virginia soared 26.7% year over year to 3.5 million tons in February and climbed 21.8% from January's total, according to data obtained March 5 from the Virginia Maritime Association.
At Norfolk Southern Corp.'s Lamberts Point facility, which primarily handles metallurgical coal, coal exports reached more than 1.5 million tons in February, spiking 33.3% from nearly 1.2 million tons of coal delivered in the year-ago period.
Kinder Morgan Energy Partners LP's Pier IX facility, which mostly handles thermal coal, went down 27.2% year over year to 711,149 tons of coal, compared to 977,214 tons in February 2017.
Dominion Terminal Associates LLP, owned by coal producers Contura Energy Inc. and Arch Coal Inc., saw its coal exports surge 94.3% year over year to roughly 1.3 million tons of coal, compared to 664,300 tons in the same period in 2017.
