Household spending in Japan down 1.3% YOY in April

The average monthly spending per household in Japan in April stood at ¥294,439, down 1.3% in real terms and 0.5% in nominal terms from the previous year, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications data showed.

The top three items with the highest increase in spending in real terms were furniture and household utensils, which grew 9.9%; housing, which rose 3%; and education, which increased 2.5%.

Items with the biggest drop in spending in April were fuel, light and water charges, which decreased 5.6%; and culture and recreation, which fell 3.8%.

The average monthly income per household came in at ¥495,370 in April, up 4.1% in real terms and 4.9% in nominal terms from the previous year.

As of June 4, US$1 was equivalent to 109.67 Japanese yen.
