Toyota to test self-driving car service in Tokyo

Toyota Research Institute, Inc., or TRI, said Oct. 24 that it will offer rides under its Platform 4 self-driving vehicle service in Tokyo from July to September 2020.

The automated vehicles are equipped with Level-4 autonomous driving software, the Toyota Guardian safety software and its Chauffeur automated driving solutions.

The Toyota Motor Corp.-owned unit said the demonstration will take place in Odaiba district, where the public can register for the experience. The company will select individuals to participate.

A safety driver will be present during the test ride.

Before conducting trials in public, Toyota Research Institute tested the service in Ottawa Lake, Mich., in a closed-course facility.
