Va. coal exports up 42.5% YOY in August

Coal exports from the Hampton Roads port facilities in Virginia increased 42.50% year over year to 4.3 million tons in August and rose 24.9% from July's total, according to data obtained Sept. 6 from the Virginia Maritime Association.

At Norfolk Southern Corp.'s Lamberts Point facility, which primarily handles metallurgical coal, coal exports reached nearly 1.7 million tons in August, up 42.50% from the 1.2 million tons of coal delivered in the year-ago period.

Kinder Morgan Inc.'s Pier IX facility, which mostly handles thermal coal, increased 77.1% year over year to 994,514 tons of coal, compared to 561,452 tons in August 2017.

Dominion Terminal Associates LLP, owned by coal producers Contura Energy Inc. and Arch Coal Inc., saw its coal exports rise 40.7% year over year to roughly 1.6 million tons of coal, compared to 1.1 million tons in the same period in 2017.
