American Electric Power Co. Inc. purchased 530,000 more tons of coal for 2018 than it requested in a recent solicitation, a spokeswoman said Dec. 20.
Melissa McHenry said in an email that AEP "was able to purchase all of the coal we were seeking with this RFP" that went out in late November.
McHenry did not indicate why AEP bought more coal than initially requested and did not identify suppliers or disclose prices.
The company bought 530,000 tons of Central Appalachian barge coal, above the 400,000 tons it sought in the request for proposals, McHenry said. AEP also purchased 2.1 million tons of Powder River Basin coal, higher than the 1.7 million tons it specified in the solicitation.
The utility procured 250,000 tons of high-sulfur Illinois Basin coal, the same amount included in the request.
All deliveries are scheduled to start in January.
