The National Western Life Insurance Co. board elevated Rey Perez to president and COO, effective Jan. 1, 2020.
He will succeed Kitty Nelson, who will remain a director. Perez joined in September 2000 and has held various positions with the company, most recently serving as executive vice president and chief legal officer.

Simon Wilson will be appointed managing executive of global strategy for insurance operations of Markel Corp., effective Jan. 1, 2020.
He is currently managing director of national markets at Markel International Ltd. Wilson will be replaced in that role by Henrik Bjornstad, current head of strategy for insurance operations at Markel Corp.
Additionally, John Enright, strategy and development executive, will be appointed head of strategy for Markel International.
Fortegra Financial Corp. named David Barber chief underwriting officer for specialty lines in London.
He is a veteran Lloyd's underwriter specializing in U.S. casualty business.
GuideOne Insurance hired Mark Groenheide as senior vice president for specialty, effective Oct. 21.
He previously worked as vice president of engineering lines for North American underwriting at HDI Global Insurance Co.
Liu Xiaopeng was appointed a nonexecutive director of China Reinsurance (Group) Corp.
