Nespresso, JD Logistics team up for recycling service in China

Nestlé SA-owned coffee brewing system Nespresso has partnered with JD.com Inc. to expand its doorstep recycling program in China using the latter's logistics arm, according to an Aug. 26 release.

Customers of the brand, which makes coffee capsules and espresso machines, can now recycle their coffee pods through the recycling initiative that will leverage the nationwide network of JD Logistics.

To carry out the program, JD Logistics set up a recycling page and integrated it with Nespresso's WeChat mini-program, enabling customers to schedule a JD courier to collect coffee capsules the same day or the next day.

JD Logistics will deliver the collected capsules to recycling plants in Beijing, Shanghai or Guangzhou, depending on the location of the customer who had the items picked up.

Previously, the service could only be done through deliveries to Nespresso Boutique locations and was only available for some busines-to-business customers like corporate offices, restaurants or hotels.

According to the release, the aluminum from the capsules will be recycled into novelty gift products like Nespresso-branded knives while the used coffee grounds will be repurposed as fertilizer for Nespresso's eco-farm on Chongming Island by the Yangtze River near Shanghai.
