Most Japanese carmakers report growth in local sales in July

Most major Japanese automakers, including Toyota Motor Corp., Honda Motor Co. Ltd., Nissan Motor Co. Ltd., Mazda Motor Corp. and Subaru Corp., saw domestic sales grow year over year in July, while other carmakers, including Suzuki Motor Corp. and Mitsubishi Motors Corp., posted declining Japan sales for the month.

Toyota saw total domestic sales grow 7.6% year over year to 215,957 vehicles as local production jumped 19.6% to 426,663 automobiles. Sales outside Japan inched up 2.3% year over year to 718,256 automobiles, a record high for the month. Production outside Japan fell 6.2% to 494,875 units. Global sales during the month grew 3.5% year over year to 934,213 vehicles, while worldwide production increased 4.2% to 921,538 automobiles.

Honda saw sales in the Japanese market grow 8.5% year over year in July to 66,027 vehicles. However, exports plummeted 25.5% year over year to 12,149 units as the U.S. only imported 872 Honda vehicles in July, down 85.1% from last year. Production in Japan inched up 1.5% to 79,415 units. Outside the country, Honda produced 350,221 vehicles in July, up 2.2% from last year, bringing the group's total worldwide production to 429,636 units, up 2% year over year.

Meanwhile, Nissan's domestic sales for July remained relatively flat at 51,073 automobiles, compared to 51,050 vehicles from the prior-year period and ending an eight-month sales slump. However, global sales fell 7.8% year over year to 394,516 vehicles as sales outside Japan plunged 8.9% to 343,443 units.

Mazda sold a total of 17,060 vehicles in Japan, up 9.8% from last year. Global sales were down 3.2% to 122,959 vehicles as sales outside Japan fell 5.1% year over year to 105,899 units. Mazda's domestic production soared 53% year over year to 88,989 automobiles, offsetting a 20.5% slump in production outside Japan, which only reached 37,313 units in July. Global production hit 126,302 units, up 20.2% year over year. Exports reached 76,588 units, up 45.5% year over year.

Subaru reported 5.3% growth in domestic sales at 12,925 vehicles, its first increase in two months. Local production grew 6.6% to 62,411 automobiles, while overseas production jumped 32.6% to 23,176 vehicles, bringing its total worldwide production to 85,587 units, up 12.5% from last year. Subaru exported 50,028 vehicles in July, representing a year-over-year increase of 31.5%.

Mitsubishi Motors sold 8,055 vehicles locally during the month, down 5.8% from a year ago. However, exports grew 1.6% year over year to 32,585 automobiles, breaking a streak of decline that started in January. Domestic production grew 10.9% year over year to 58,023 vehicles, while production outside Japan also rose 7.9% to 68,247 autos.

Suzuki also had a 12% decline in local sales to 53,226 units. Production in Japan in July fell 15% year over year to 76,957 vehicles. Overseas, production was also down 18.2% from last year to 179,721 units, bringing the total global production during the month to 256,678 units, down 17.3% year over year.
