British Telecom's international division BT Global Services Ltd. is planning to reduce its customer base by more than 80%, as part of an effort to recover from an accounting scandal involving the telco's Italian unit, London's Financial Times reported.
The company reportedly intends to retain its 800 largest and most profitable business clients out of a list of 5,200 companies.
BT Global Services has also begun shifting its focus to cloud computing services, in response to a change in customer needs. The strategic shift is expected to be completed within three to five years, according to the report.
In January 2017, BT revealed accounting errors at BT Italia SpA, which led to a £530 million write-down.
BT has been working to restructure its operations as it seeks to move on from the scandal. Its plans include the off-loading of BT Italia, laying off about 13,000 employees over the next three years and closing its London headquarters.
