Fox Networks Group names new COO; Ive returns to lead Apple's design team

* 21st Century Fox Inc.'s Fox Networks Group promoted Brian Sullivan to president and COO of the company. Sullivan succeeded Randy Freer, who recently left Fox Networks Group to join Hulu LLC as CEO, the company said Dec. 7. Sullivan will continue to lead Fox Networks Group's Digital Consumer Group, which he has been heading as president and COO since 2015.

* Apple Inc.'s Chief Design Officer Jonathan Ive has returned to lead the company's design teams after working on other projects for two years, Reuters reported Dec. 8. Ive had delegated some managerial duties to Apple design executives Alan Dye and Richard Howarth, who will now report to him once again. He was named chief design officer of the tech giant in July 2015.

Media industry moves

* Google Inc. announced Dec. 13 the launch of an artificial intelligence research center in Beijing during its second annual developers conference in Shanghai. Fei-Fei Li, chief scientist for Google Cloud AI and machine learning, will lead and coordinate research at the Google AI China Center along with Jia Li, head of research and development at Google Cloud AI. The Alphabet Inc. unit has already hired some experts and is looking to hire some more in the coming months.

* Former Gap Inc. executive Aimée Lapic joined Pandora Media Inc. as chief marketing officer, effective Dec. 13. At Pandora, Lapic will lead consumer brand strategy, market positioning, performance-based and partnership marketing, the company said Dec. 12. Lapic previously served Gap as chief marketing officer for Banana Republic and the general manager of BananaRepublic.com.

* Nexstar Media Group Inc. said Dec. 7 that it agreed to buy independent video advertising infrastructure company LKQD Technologies Inc. for about $90 million in cash. Senior members of the LKQD management team, including CEO and Co-Founder Brian DeFrancesco and Chief Technology Officer and co-founder Christophe Clapp, will work for Nexstar.

Communications industry moves

* Altice NV-owned Altice USA Inc., Charter Communications Inc. and Comcast Corp.'s Comcast Cable reached a preliminary agreement to form a new Interconnect in the New York market. The initiative will provide advertisers the ability to reach subscribers of all three cable operators and other multichannel video program distributors in the New York metropolitan area, representing more than 6.2 million households, the companies said Dec. 13. Ed Renicker, current head of the New York Interconnect and president of Altice Media Solutions, will serve as CEO of the new Interconnect.

* Digerati Technologies Inc. said Dec. 13 that it appointed Charlie Slaughter to the newly created position of chief revenue officer. Slaughter previously served as president of cloud communication services provider Synergy Telecom Inc., which Digerati recently acquired. Digerati also named Ryan McDowell vice president of alliances and business development. McDowell previously served as a regional channel manager for Vonage Holdings Corp.'s Vonage Business, will oversee all channel sales and business development efforts for Digerati.

* Vonage opened an office at Business Airport Marunouchi, near Tokyo Station. The company said Dec. 12 that it named Hiroshige Kusumoto country director to focus on growing the Japanese customer base. Kusumoto recently was country manager of Japan for video and collaboration software provider Vidyo Inc.
