Amazon.com Inc. wants to study how bodies change over time in order to predict how clothes will fit on a variety of body shapes, The Wall Street Journal reported May 3, citing an online survey conducted by Amazon.
The company has invited people to participate in 10 semimonthly visits to Amazon's New York office, where their body sizes will be measured over a 20-week period, the report said.
Amazon reportedly will use its 3D body-scanning unit, a result of the retailer's acquisition of startup Body Labs in October 2017.
Moreover, the e-commerce giant reportedly is building 3D models of human bodies to match them with images and videos of people, using deep learning algorithms.
The study may also help curb the costs of apparel returns for Amazon and other online retailers.
An Amazon spokeswoman reportedly said she could not comment on rumor or speculation.
