The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission on March 2 said it took action against Woolworths Group Ltd. for allegedly misrepresenting their disposable cutlery products as biodegradable.
The Australian grocer allegedly marketed its "W Select eco" brand as "biodegradable and compostable" from November 2014 to November 2017. The commission said that the environmental claims made by the company about its said products were "false, misleading or deceptive" and against Australian consumer law.
The commission suggested that the grocer did not make adequate efforts to substantiate its claims that the products would biodegrade "within a reasonable period of time" after being disposed of in domestic compost bins or landfill sites.
The commission is seeking penalties, injunctions, declarations, publication orders and costs, the release said.
