Romanian Prime Minister Viorica Dancila and her government were ousted Oct. 10 after losing a no-confidence motion in parliament, media reports said.
A total of 238 lawmakers in Romania's 465-member parliament voted in favor of the motion, five more than what was required, to topple Dancila and her minority cabinet, according to BBC News and Bloomberg News.
The opposition National Liberal Party, which will unveil its strategy on Oct. 11, has the opportunity to form a coalition government ahead of the presidential election in November.
Incumbent President Klaus Iohannis, who is expected to win a second term and defeat Dancila as suggested by opinion polls, will appoint a new prime minister.
Dancila is the third Romanian prime minister toppled in as many years. She was appointed in January 2018 and lost parliamentary majority in August 2019 after a coalition partner withdrew support.
Apart from leading a coalition government, the opposition could also back a caretaker government until the next general elections in late 2020 or allow an interim government to rule until after this year's presidential vote, Bloomberg News reported.
Romania cannot hold a snap parliamentary election during the last six months of a presidential term, the report noted. Iohannis will end his term in December.
