Portland General Electric Co. said customer enrollment has been strong for its "Green Future Impact" program, which allows large commercial and industrial customers to source 100% of their electricity from new wind or solar energy facilities.
Subscriptions are for 10- or 15-year terms, and pricing reflects the actual cost of producing and delivering the energy from a specific facility. The subscriptions to a dedicated power purchase agreement will bring a new wind or solar facility online, according to an Aug. 21 news release. Portland General Electric, or PGE, estimates the Green Future Impact program could add up to 300 MW of new renewable resources to its system.
The Oregon Public Utility Commission approved the program earlier in 2019 for customers with more than a 30-kW annual aggregate peak demand or a 10-MW average load. PGE said the first facility will be located in Oregon and operational by the end of 2021. As a bundled green product, customers will receive energy from that facility, along with associated renewable energy credits.
Within three minutes of enrollment opening, PGE said customers subscribed to purchase the equivalent of a 160-MW renewable energy facility. Customers that have enrolled include Adobe Inc., Comcast Corp., Daimler Trucks North America LLC, Digital Realty, Oregon Health & Science University, Portland Community College, Portland State University and the cities of Beaverton, Hillsboro, Lake Oswego, Milwaukie, Portland, Salem, West Linn and Wilsonville, along with Multnomah and Washington counties.
