Qualcomm posts bonds to enforce iPhone ban in Germany

Qualcomm Inc. has posted security bonds totaling €1.34 billion to enforce a permanent injunction against Apple Inc.'s iPhones in Germany.

The bonds were posted as part of a legal requirement by the District Court of Munich, which on Dec. 20, 2018, banned the sale of iPhones in Germany that were found to have infringed the chipmaker's patented power savings technology used in smartphones. The court also ordered Apple to recall infringing iPhones from third-party resellers in Germany.

The news comes after the Fuzhou Intermediate People's Court in China found that Apple had infringed on two Qualcomm patents related to adjusting the size and appearance of photographs and managing apps using a touch-screen device. The court issued a preliminary injunction banning the import and sales of Apple's iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X models.

Qualcomm is also looking to broaden the ban in China to sales of the latest models: the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR.
