News Corp. closes Australian deal; Facebook buys The Eye Tribe

S&P Global Market Intelligence provides a wrap-up of U.S. media and communications deal announcements and completions from Dec. 26 to Dec. 30.

* News Corp. unit News Corp. Ltd. completed its purchase of Australian Regional Media, the regional newspaper publishing arm of APN News and Media, APN said in a Dec. 28 filing to the Australian Securities Exchange. Australian Regional Media, a publisher in regional Queensland and Northern New South Wales, owns 12 daily newspapers, 60 community newspapers and non-daily publications, and more than 30 regional news websites and mobile sites. APN News will mainly use the proceeds from the sale, worth A$36.6 million, to pay off its existing debt.

* Facebook Inc.'s virtual reality unit Oculus VR Inc. acquired Copenhagen-based startup, The Eye Tribe, TechCrunch reported Dec. 28. Oculus reportedly confirmed the acquisition of the startup. The Eye Tribe has developed technology that allows VR systems to save power by generating perfect graphics based on where the user is looking.

* Snap Inc. acquired Israeli startup Cimagine for $30 million to $40 million, reported Dec. 25, citing Israeli outlet Calcalist News. Cimagine's augmented reality platform allows users to instantly visualize products they want to buy in their intended location. The deal could reportedly help Snap use the startup's technology to augment campaigns for Snapchat.
