Florida Municipal Power Agency, together with 12 municipal electric utilities and Origis Energy USA Inc., announced plans Dec. 12 to expand the Florida Municipal solar project.

The expansion, or phase two of the project, would add 149 MW of capacity through the construction of two 74.5-MW solar farms in Alachua County and Putnam County, Fla.

The first phase of the solar project is comprised of three solar farms, each with a capacity of 74.5 MW: Florida Municipal Solar Project 1, Florida Municipal Solar Project 2 and Florida Municipal Solar Project 3.

Origis will build, own and operate the second phase of the Florida Municipal solar project, which is slated for completion in 2023. The first phase of the project began construction in November, according to a news release.

Upon completion of the entire project, a total of 372.5 MW of solar capacity will be available to the municipal utilities.

The 12 utilities that will purchase the output of the solar project's phase two include Fort Pierce Utilities Authority, Havana, Homestead, Beaches Energy Services in Jacksonville Beach, Keys Energy Services in Key West, Kissimmee Utility Authority, Lake Worth Beach, Mount Dora, Utilities Commission City of New Smyrna Beach, Newberry, Ocala and Winter Park.
