Former Chancellor Kurz's party set to win Austria snap poll

Former Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz is on track to return to power after his party won the country's snap general election held Sept. 29.

The Austrian People's Party, or ÖVP, secured 38.4% of the votes, or 73 seats in the 183-seat lower house of parliament, according to preliminary results shown on the Austrian Interior Ministry's website.

The Social Democrats secured 21.5% of the votes, while the far-right Freedom Party, or FPÖ, won 17.3%, giving them 41 and 32 seats, respectively, in the National Council. The Green party was in fourth place with 12.4%, or 23 seats.

Austrians headed to the polls after Kurz lost a confidence vote in May amid a corruption scandal that ended his coalition government with the FPÖ.

Kurz said he intends to meet with all parties, without ruling out any options of a coalition partner, Reuters reported.

The final result of the elections is expected Oct. 3.
