Siemens Gamesa supplying turbines for 640-MW Taiwanese offshore wind project

Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy announced that it signed a letter of intent to supply turbines to German developer wpd AG's for the 640-MW Yunlin offshore wind project in Taiwan.

The letter of intent, which is yet to be finalized, includes delivery of components for 80 units and a 15-year service contract. The agreement will remain in force until July 2019, according to a May 31 release.

The construction of the project, located approximately 6 kilometers from the coast in the Taiwan Strait, is expected to start in 2019 and turbines will be installed in 2020. The project recently received a grid allocation from the Taiwanese government.

The Siemens AG subsidiary said it has also signed agreement with several local partners related to the Taiwanese government's target to install 520 MW by 2020, and a capacity of 3.8 GW for offshore wind projects in the first round of its grid allocation mechanism.

Wpd is a German company and acts as a partner for the development, financing, construction and operation of onshore and offshore wind farms.

In a separate news release, Dutch energy infrastructure developer Van Oord NV announced that it received its first Asian order from Taiwan to plan, manufacture and install the 80 foundations for the Yunlin offshore project. The project is expected to have a value of €500 million.
